Spin-polarized AES on magnetic thin film systems

U. Pustogowa, P. Weinberger (TU Wien)

AES is a powerful method to get element specific informations of the electronic structure in the surface range. A still small number of experiments has shown the possibility of detecting spin polarization in Auger electrons. Based on spin-polarized fully relativistic multiple scattering theory a theoretical description of AES is used to emphasize new features in comparison to a non-spinpolarized description. Core-core-valence Auger electron spectra of Co in Pd(111)/Co/Pd and Pt(111)/Co/Pt are explained by means of electronic structure calculations using the screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. In detail, we discuss the convolution in the Auger electron spin polarization resulting from the valence band and the core states. Therefore, the direct and exchange part of the transition cross sections are compared and we discuss methods of separating valence band and core state effects.
